Bachelor of Science in Accounting & Finance

The BS (Accounting & Finance) is a highly specialised degree, preparing the graduate as having expertise in Accountancy and Finance. The students will acquire the knowledge and technical skills needed to analyse accounting/finance and business problems, and they will understand how best to communicate and use financial information to support business decisions. The degree offers specialization in accounting and/or Finance.
With the management of financial information underpinning all business activities, there are more employment and career opportunities in accounting and finance than many other areas of study. This degree will prepare students for a rewarding career in any sector of the economy. The graduates may work as a Financial Accountant, Forensic Accountant, Management Accountant, Auditor, Chief Financial Officer, Financial Advisor and Tax Specialist.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The graduates of Accounting & Finance program are expected to

  1. The BS (Accounting & Finance) program is aimed at giving students a solid foundation in accounting and finance, rounded out with the all-important interpersonal, computer, and business communication skills critical for success in today’s business environment.
  2. The degree will give students an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment that commercial organisations and accounting professionals must work within.
  3. Students will be able to identify and evaluate ethical dilemmas and provide logical ways to resolve them. They will learn the concepts and processes needed to protect, validate and attest to the integrity and reliability of financial information.
  4. By studying financial institutions, markets, and business finance, students will learn about the components of the financial system and how it impacts upon financial decisions in an organisation.
  5. Students will study the financial system, institutions, and financial instruments, which are involved with the transfer of funds between individuals, businesses and governments. This includes critical short-run decisions, such as cash management and credit policy, which affect the survival of the organisation. Long-term decisions include investment in plant and equipment, fundraising, and mergers and takeovers, all of which determine the wealth of the owners.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Upon successful completion of the degree in Accounting & Finance, students should be able to:

  1. Cost/Managerial : Students will be able to apply the concepts and skills learned in the areas of product costing, budgeting, and performance analysis.
  2. Financial : Students will be able to prepare and interpret financial statements, analyze company performance, and apply IFRS’s to financial transactions.
  3. Taxation : Students will demonstrate an understanding of federal income tax law in the United States by explaining sources and rationale for tax law, distinguishing between economic and tax items of gross income, identifying requirements for business deductions and differentiating between realized and recognized gains and losses.
  4. Audit : Students will be able to apply auditing standards, employ appropriate audit procedures and recognize professional behavior expectations of auditors.
